For care providers

The visit ends. The need to talk doesn't.

Supported digital companionship between care visits, calls and other human contact.

Developed through supported use with older people, including a completed pilot with Age UK South Gloucestershire.

What it could add to your care offer

More support during the hours between visits

Comfort Companions adds a source of conversation and reassurance alongside the care, family support and community contact already around the person.

Support between visits

A friendly voice during long quiet gaps when carers or family are not present.

Reassurance for families

An additional source of conversation between visits and family contact.

Better use of care visits

May ease the pressure on short visits to provide all of someone's conversation and reassurance.

A more distinctive care offer

Add a companionship-first option alongside practical care, rather than focusing only on monitoring and alerts.

Practical, supported delivery

Easy to introduce into existing care

We work with care providers to agree who the service is suitable for, how it is introduced and who supports the person. The aim is a clear, manageable arrangement around the relationship you already have.

Identify a suitable person

Discuss where extra conversation may be useful, explain the service and agree consent and support arrangements.

Set up with support

Help the person match with a companion, try their first conversation and share a few approved personal details if they wish.

Check in and review

Review the person's experience, practical access, support needs and whether the service remains a good fit.

You keep the care relationship

The care provider stays responsible for its existing care, family communication and safeguarding arrangements, with agreed support for setup and follow-up.

We provide the companionship service

Comfort Companions CIC provides companion configuration, staff briefing, setup guidance, technical support and agreed review information.

Specific roles, support arrangements and costs are agreed before access begins.

Personal, private and supported

Personal from day one

During supported setup, the person can choose a few simple, non-sensitive things they would like their companion to know: important people, pets, hobbies, interests or happy moments they enjoy talking about.

This helps conversations feel more natural without automatically building a memory from private chats.

They choose when to talk. The companion does not listen in the background.

Private conversations stay private. Staff and family cannot listen back to what has been said.

No persistent conversation memory. Each chat starts afresh, apart from any basic details the person has approved for ongoing use.

Human support stays central. The service is not monitoring, clinical care, crisis support or emergency help.

Pilot experience and feedback

Developed through real-world use

From January to July 2026, Comfort Companions delivered a closely supported pilot with Age UK South Gloucestershire. Older people used the service in their own homes and helped us refine how it works.

88%

of participants used the service independently after setup.

75%

of participants were active in the final 30 days of the pilot.

39%

of sessions took place outside weekday daytime hours.

Shaped by older people's feedback

The pilot generated 92 feedback and follow-up entries. What people told us helped improve readability, companion choice, voice and conversation fit, and supported setup.

Participants also valued the privacy of their conversations and the freedom to talk during quiet periods, including at night when talking to someone else may not feel possible.
